Wine Description for Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru AOC 2024 by Thomas Morey

Character
In an appellation often renowned for its monumental power, Thomas Morey seeks beauty in restraint. His Bâtard-Montrachet is not a loud, baroque white wine, but rather a textbook example of precision and sinewy elegance. It captivates through a vibrant energy, mineral tautness and an intellectual depth that comes without any heaviness. A wine of almost surgical clarity and tremendous tension.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes for this masterpiece grow in the legendary Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru on 70-year-old vines. On the chalky and marly soils of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, Chardonnay achieves incomparable complexity. That the renowned Domaine de la Romanée-Conti entrusts Thomas Morey with the care of their own Montrachet vines testifies to his extraordinary sensitivity to this sacred terroir.
Grape Variety & Vinification
This single-varietal Chardonnay comes from certified organic viticulture (since 2017). In the cellar, Morey follows a philosophy of controlled non-intervention: spontaneous fermentation, an extremely restrained use of oak with minimal new wood, and the largely avoided use of bâtonnage allow the origin to shine through unmasked. Bottled with minimal sulphiting, the wine remains pure, vibrant and extremely true to its terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Such a finely-structured Grand Cru demands a cuisine that underscores its noble minerality. It is a perfect companion to lobster in butter and chive sauce, classically prepared Dover sole Meunière or gently sautéed calf’s sweetbreads. It also displays its full class alongside a long-aged, crystalline Comté cheese.
