Wine Description for Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru AOC 2023 by Thomas Morey

Character
The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru from Thomas Morey ranks among the great white Burgundies that one opens with reverent silence. Dry and of impressive depth, this wine embodies the ideal of Burgundian Chardonnay: power and elegance in perfect balance. At 13.0% vol., it moves within a classical framework that promises substance without sacrificing finesse.
Terroir & Origin
The Bâtard-Montrachet lies in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, on the border between Chassagne- and Puligny-Montrachet – one of the world’s most celebrated vineyard sites. The shallow, limestone-rich soil with its high clay content imparts the wines with a characteristic fullness and mineral depth that no other place on earth can produce in quite the same way. The 2023 vintage was marked in Burgundy by warmth and early ripeness – a year that produced ripe, expressive wines with natural opulence, without losing the tension so typical of Grand Cru sites.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Chardonnay, as it finds its definitive expression in Burgundy. Thomas Morey, who runs his estate in Chassagne-Montrachet with precise craftsmanship and deep knowledge of vineyard sites, favours a careful maturation that places terroir at the forefront. The use of oak barrels – typical for Grand Cru wines of this appellation – serves to build structure, not to add flavour. The result is a wine that demands time and rewards it generously.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A wine of this calibre deserves partners of equal standing. Classic and unrivalled: lobster with beurre blanc, scallops on truffle foam or a simple yet flawless Poulet de Bresse à la crème. Aged Comté or a fine Langres also enter into a worthy dialogue with this Grand Cru. Those with courage open it solo – as a meditation on what wine can be.
