Wine Description for Basarin Barbaresco DOCG 2021 1500ml Magnum by Sottimano
- Colour & Appearance
- Brilliant, luminous cherry red with even colouring – a classic Nebbiolo robe that radiates transparency and elegance.
- Nose
- The Basarin initially reveals sour cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry, yet the fruit here is merely a vehicle for something greater. The true fascination lies in the profound spice: juniper, black pepper, allspice and cubeb pepper dominate. These are joined by rosehip tea, cranberry, dried fig as well as fine roasted aromas, cold smoke and forest floor. Dried herbs such as marjoram, tarragon and savory round off the complex bouquet – a Nebbiolo that communicates origin and terroir in every breath.
- Palate
- Here the great strength of the Basarin reveals itself: its subtle balance. Nothing stands out, nothing imposes itself. The interplay of tannin, fruit, acidity, bitter compounds and minerality appears almost perfectly orchestrated. Extract-rich fruit builds pressure, whilst finely woven tannins carry like a flying carpet. The pronounced yet perfectly integrated acidity lends vibrancy and tension, promotes the drinking flow and stimulates salivation. Fleshy and firm, yet underpinned by radiantly clear fruit and cool minerality. The mouthfeel is silky, the elegance remarkable.
- Finish
- Long, fruity-ethereal with dominant notes of juniper, allspice and dried herbs. The rapid drinking flow culminates in an aftertaste that resonates openly and joyfully.
- Terroir & Origin
- Sottimano acquired the three hectares of the Basarin vineyard site in Neive only in 2014 and immediately converted it to organic-biodynamic cultivation. The approximately 50-year-old vines yield a Nebbiolo of earthy depth and subtle complexity at modest 40 hl/ha.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, destemmed and fermented or left on the skins for up to 60 days. Regular punching down of the cap in open stainless steel fermentation vessels. Maturation since 2020 in large, slightly conical botti for around 24 months.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Braised leg of lamb with fresh peas and rosemary potatoes, cassoulet of beans, bacon and pointed cabbage or pan-fried duck breast with beetroot and horseradish sauce.
- Special Features
- The magnum bottle promises even better development potential. The most subtle wine in Sottimano’s portfolio – power meets finesse, Bruce Lee rather than Schwarzenegger.
