Tasting note
Character
A classic Crozes-Hermitage from old vines, embodying the powerful elegance of the northern Rhône. The designation “Vieilles Vignes” promises concentration and depth that goes beyond simple appellation wines. The 2022 vintage brought wines with good freshness and vibrant fruit despite climatic challenges – a welcome contrast to the warmer preceding vintages. With 13% alcohol, the wine presents itself pleasantly restrained, emphasising finesse over power.
Terroir & Origin
Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation of the northern Rhône and surrounds the legendary hill of Hermitage like an amphitheatre. The finest vineyard sites are found on the granite soils and gravel deposits near Gervans and Larnage. Les Bruyères cultivates old Syrah vines here, whose deep roots deliver mineral complexity and authentic expression. The continental climate with the cooling influence of the Mistral wind ensures the characteristic spice and freshness of northern Rhône Syrah.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Syrah displays its most refined side in the northern Rhône – far removed from the opulent fruit bombs of warmer regions. Here wines emerge with black olives, smoked meat, violets and a peppery spice. Old vines deliver smaller yields with more intense aromatics. The moderate alcohol content suggests a traditional, terroir-oriented vinification that prioritises origin over technical perfection.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to grilled lamb, beef steaks or game. The spicy notes harmonise beautifully with Provençal herbs, thyme and rosemary. Also an excellent choice with cassoulet, ratatouille or aged hard cheeses. The freshness of the vintage makes it an ideal food wine.
