Wine Description for Zwickl Grüner Veltliner Dry 2023 from Nikolaihof

Colour & Appearance
Naturally cloudy, pale golden yellow with delicate green reflections – the unfiltered appearance immediately reveals the house’s artisanal philosophy.
Nose
An aromatic fireworks display that unites tradition and vibrancy. The yeasty spice forms the foundation, above which nectarine, mango and lemon zest unfold, accompanied by floral notes such as linden blossom and chamomile. With air contact, a fascinating herbal spiciness develops: wild mint, nettle and an earthy tree bark note lend the wine additional depth and complexity.
Palate
Here the full class of the Zwickl reveals itself: creamy texture meets vibrant freshness. Apple and citrus fruit dominate, whilst a fine tannin – unusual for white wine, but typical of unfiltered Veltliners – creates grip and tension. The yeasty notes lend additional substance without compromising elegance.
Finish
Refreshing and lingering, with a saline minerality that recalls the primary rock soils of the Wachau. The herbal spice resonates long after.
Terroir & Origin
From the Wachau, where Nikolaihof, Austria’s oldest wine estate, has practised biodynamic viticulture for centuries. The primary rock terraces and pannonian climate shape the character of this lively Veltliner.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grüner Veltliner in its most natural form: unfiltered, unrefined, aged on the lees. The term „Zwickl“ traditionally designates naturally cloudy wines – here a commitment to minimal cellar intervention. With moderate 12.5% alcohol, the wine remains light-footed and approachable.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Chilled well, the perfect summer refreshment on its own. Excellent with asparagus with hollandaise sauce, pan-fried zander, Wiener Schnitzel, herb fresh cheese or goat’s cheese. The yeasty texture also makes it an ideal companion to sushi and steamed fish.
Special Characteristics
An authentic, energetic Veltliner that combines biodynamic principles with Wachau tradition. Natural wine in the best sense – characterful, yet never eccentric.
