Wine Description for Ypsilon IGT 2021 by Tenuta di Castellaro

Character
The Ypsilon IGT 2021 is an ambitious blending project from the heart of Sicily – a wine that understands the island not as a cliché, but as a living terroir. With an alcohol content of 13.0% vol. and a dry style, it displays restraint and elegance where other Sicilian red wines tend to revel in abundance. The unusual combination of grape varieties makes it a wine with its own character – inquisitive, multi-layered and thoughtfully crafted.
Terroir & Origin
Tenuta di Castellaro operates on the Aeolian island of Lipari, a volcanic archipelago north of the Sicilian coast – a terroir of extraordinary distinctiveness. Volcanic soils, intense sea breezes and the rugged island sun shape the grapes in a way that no other place in the world can replicate. This extreme, deeply Mediterranean terroir gives the wines a mineral tension and aromatic precision that far exceeds expectations.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The cuvée unites three grape varieties with very different histories: Nero d’Avola, Sicily’s great indigenous flagship, brings structure, dark fruit and Mediterranean warmth. Korinthiaki – a Greek rarity that recalls the ancient trade routes of the Mediterranean – contributes vibrancy and fine spice. Alicante (Grenache Noir) rounds out the ensemble with smoothness and depth. This combination is no accident, but a clear statement: Sicily as a crossroads of cultures and grape varieties. The moderate alcohol content points to careful, freshness-focused winemaking.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The Ypsilon unfolds beautifully with grilled tuna or swordfish alla ghiotta – classic dishes from Sicilian coastal cuisine. It also harmonises wonderfully with caponata, braised lamb with herbs or mature hard cheeses. A wine that tells stories at the table – of volcanoes, sea winds and the long history of the Mediterranean.
