Wine Description for Ypsilon IGT 2021 by Tenuta di Castellaro

Colour & Appearance
Luminous ruby red with violet reflections that underscore the youth of this Sicilian red wine. Medium intensity with brilliant clarity in the glass.
Nose
Expressive and Mediterranean: ripe cherry and blackberry meet dried herbs and a hint of black pepper. The volcanic soils of Lipari lend the wine a fascinating mineral note reminiscent of lava stone and sea breeze. Subtle hints of thyme and Mediterranean maquis complete the aromatic profile.
Palate
Juicy and fresh with vibrant fruit. The blend of Nero d’Avola, Korinthianki and Alicante shows itself elegant and approachable. Moderate tannins, well integrated, with a pleasant spiciness. The volcanic minerality continues on the palate and lends the wine tension and structure. At 13% alcohol, the Ypsilon remains balanced and never heavy – a true island wine with character.
Finish
Medium length with lingering fruit and herbal notes. The saline minerality fades and leaves a refreshing, slightly spicy impression.
Terroir & Origin
Hailing from the island of Lipari, this wine benefits from the unique volcanic terroir of the Aeolian Islands. The mineral-rich lava stone, the constant winds of the mythical Aeolus and the proximity to the sea shape its distinctive character. Dr. Massimo Lentsch is the only commercial winemaker on Lipari – a true pioneer of island winemaking.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Fascinating three-way blend of Sicilian Nero d’Avola, the Greek rarity Korinthianki and Alicante. This combination unites local tradition with Mediterranean diversity and reflects the cultural bridge function of the Aeolian Islands.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Perfect with grilled swordfish, caponata, pasta alla Norma or Sicilian arancini. Also an excellent choice with herb-crusted lamb chops or grilled Mediterranean vegetables.
Special Features
The only commercially produced wine from the UNESCO World Heritage island of Lipari. An authentic piece of Aeolian wine culture in a bottle.
