Wine description for Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2017 by Rémi Jobard

Rémi Jobard, renowned for his masterful Meursaults, demonstrates with the Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2017 that his philosophy of minimal intervention also delivers brilliant results with Pinot Noir. This wine is a manifesto for purism: Jobard eschews masking oak spice and instead opts for the 600-litre half-barrel from Stockinger. The result is a Volnay of aristocratic restraint, which perfectly balances the warmth of the 2017 vintage with an almost cool, mineral precision. Unfiltered and settled after two winters in barrel, it reveals the soul of the terroir without any fashionable embellishment.

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, transparent ruby red with delicate violet reflections at the rim.
Nose
A clear bouquet of wild raspberries and sour cherries, underpinned by a fine note of wet stone and a hint of dried herbs. Not a trace of obtrusive vanilla, instead a subtle, smoky depth.
Palate
On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be remarkably lean and focused. The texture is silky with fine-grained tannins. A vibrant acidity carries aromas of redcurrants and graphite. It comes across as wiry, energetic and delightfully mineral.
Finish
Long-lasting and precise with a saline finish that makes you crave the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The Santenots vineyard site lies geographically in Meursault, but is classified as Volnay 1er Cru for red varieties. The soil is characterised by calcareous clay, which gives the wine both power and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Pinot Noir. Aged in wooden barrels (only 20% new), use of 600l Stockinger barrels to preserve freshness. Unfiltered bottling after extended storage over two winters.
Food Pairing Recommendations
Excellent with roasted pheasant, morel risotto or a classically prepared Boeuf Bourguignon. Also a delight with aged Comté.
Special Features
A wine for purists who value complexity and structure over primary fruit sweetness.
