Wine Description for Valpolicella Classico Superiore DOC Casal Vegri 2021 by Ca´ La Bionda
- Colour & Appearance
- Radiant ruby red, transparent and clear – a visual statement for elegance rather than opulence. This Valpolicella presents itself deliberately light-footed and refuses the dark concentration of modern Amarone imitations.
- Nose
- Exuberant florals with mallows, hollyhocks and violets, accompanied by an entire cherry spectrum: cornelian cherry, heart cherry, sour cherry and mulberries unfold in layers. Spicy accents of walnut shells, green almonds and cashews lend distinctive depth – an aromatic complexity that invites lingering.
- Palate
- Here Ca‘ La Bionda shows true greatness: refreshing, transparent, with silky flow and pronounced acidity that forms a taut and precise backbone. Cherry dominates as the leading aroma, whilst silky tannin elegantly embraces the long, sweeping arc of acidity. Shimmering in extract, delicate in structure – this wine understands itself as an authentic Valpolicella, not as a lesser Amarone. This very attitude makes it the benchmark of the region.
- Finish
- Long and fresh with lingering cherry echo and fine spice. The acidity carries far without dominating – a finish with considerable drive and elegant resonance.
- Terroir & Origin
- From the heart of Valpolicella Classico: The eponymous Casal Vegri vineyard site lies between 150 and 300 metres elevation with easterly exposure. Clay-limestone soils with a high proportion of rocks and stones characterise the mineral character.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Classic blend of 70% Corvina, 20% Corvinone and 10% Rondinella with Molinara. Hand-harvested, temperature-controlled fermentation at a maximum of 25°C in stainless steel, followed by 18 months in 3000-litre casks and a further six months bottle age – patient, traditional maturation.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Saltimbocca alla Romana, Ossobuco, Pasta al Ragù, Risotto with Radicchio, Polenta with Mushrooms, mature Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino.
- Special Characteristics
- A Valpolicella with character and identity – refreshingly different in a region that often tends towards heaviness.
