Wine Description for Ried Zieregg Kapelle Sauvignon Blanc Große STK Vineyard Site 2020 from Tement
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a wine that promises precision and purity from the very first glance.
- Nose
- An extraordinarily mineral Sauvignon Blanc that practically leaps from the glass with crushed stone and smokiness. Complemented by green pears, greengage plums, limequats and mint, interspersed with lichen notes. With air contact, the citric component becomes more pronounced, and the varietal aromas of gooseberries and blackcurrant come to the fore. The nose evokes a dialogue between South Styrian minerality and the silex character of Pouilly-Fumé – flint in its purest form.
- Palate
- Absolutely pure and crystalline. The wine feels like liquefied stone, threaded through with iodine, lime and lemon juice, green apples and pears. The forceful acidity practically shatters the mineral structure and lends the wine razor-sharp precision. Gooseberries, a hint of elderflower, white pepper and salted lemon complete the picture of an uncompromising, purist Sauvignon Blanc.
- Finish
- Long, saline and impressively sharp. The stone resonates, carried by a vibrant acidity that lingers on the palate for minutes to come.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Kapelle parcel sits at 470 metres altitude on the plateau of the legendary Ried Zieregg, directly beneath the Carmelite Chapel. The 1.48 hectares with approximately 7,000 vines benefit from all-day sunshine exposure whilst remaining protected by a cooling forest canopy. The soil of heavy clay and loam on coral limestone decisively shapes the pronounced minerality of this wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Sauvignon Blanc from 18-year-old vines, organically farmed. Spontaneous fermentation and maturation in neutral used 700-litre vessels underscore the purist philosophy of the Tement estate.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Grilled langoustines on pea hummus with ricotta and mint, tuna crudo with caper vinaigrette, grilled green beans and aubergines with salted lemon or oysters – this wine demands seafood and precise, restrained flavours.
- Special Characteristics
- A Zieregg for purists – not a wine for compromise, but for lovers of mineral, bone-dry Sauvignon Blancs with extraordinary ageing potential. The new vineyard site classification of South Styria from 2020 onwards makes this single-vineyard bottling possible.
