Colour & Appearance

Bright, clear golden yellow with silvery reflections – a wine that signals precision and purity even in the glass.

Nose

The nose is characterised by an almost meditative, mineral austerity: crushed stone, smoke and silex dominate at first, before fine layers of fruit reveal themselves – green pear, greengage, limequat and a touch of mint. With air, the wine opens up to its classic Sauvignon Blanc identity: gooseberry, cassis and delicate citrus notes. A fascinating combination of Southern Styrian warmth and the cool sharpness of a great Pouilly-Fumé.

Palate

On the palate, the Kapelle reveals itself as a wine of extraordinary clarity and texture – liquefied stone meets iodine, lime juice, green apple and gooseberry. A powerful, cutting acidity bursts through the minerality and gives the wine an almost crystalline tension. Notes of preserved lemon and white pepper underline the purist signature of this terroir.

Finish

Long, salty and razor-sharp – a finish that lingers and demands a second sip. Zieregg for purists.

Terroir & Origin

The Ried Zieregg Kapelle is located on the plateau of the Tement family’s legendary estate vineyard, at the foot of a Carmelite chapel, at 470 metres above sea level. All-day sun exposure is tempered by a cooling canopy of forest. The soil of heavy clay and loam on coralline limestone gives the wine its unmistakable depth and minerality.

Grape Variety & Vinification

Sauvignon Blanc from 1.48 hectares with around 7,000 vines aged 18 years – the youngest part of the Zieregg ensemble. Spontaneous fermentation and ageing in neutral, used 700-litre casks preserve the purity of the terroir, without any distraction from oak aromas.

Food Pairings

The salty minerality and precise acidity make this wine the ideal companion for grilled langoustines on pea hummus with ricotta and mint, tuna crudo with caper vinaigrette, parsley and olive oil, as well as grilled green beans and aubergines with preserved lemon and marjoram.

Special Features

The 2020 vintage marks the first official appearance of the Ried Zieregg Kapelle as an independent Große STK Lage – a historic moment in the history of the Tement winery and of Southern Styria. A wine for collectors and mineral enthusiasts with excellent ageing potential.
