Wine description for Gelber Muskateller dry 2022 from

In the Wachau, where the Danube cuts through the steep terraces like a silver ribbon, this remarkable Gelbe Muskateller is created - a wine that reflects the crystalline clarity of its homeland and at the same time embodies the centuries-old tradition of Austrian winemaking.

Visual impression

In the glass, the wine presents itself in a fascinating platinum colour with subtle greenish reflections, reminiscent of the sunlight breaking through the morning mist of the Wachau - clear, precise and with an almost translucent elegance.

Nose

The aromatic signature of this Muscatelier is impressively precise. Not exuberant, but with the restrained eloquence of a well-told poem, notes of wild wild roses and delicate scented roses unfold. Underneath lies a cool minty freshness reminiscent of the mountain herbs of the Alpine foothills. Fine nutmeg nuances - the unmistakable characteristic of the grape variety - combine with the crystalline clarity of early apples and juicy pears. It is an aromatic profile of floating lightness that perfectly captures the cool minerality of the loess soils over Danube gravel.

Palate

The true mastery of this wine is revealed on the palate. The spontaneous fermentation and careful ageing in large wooden barrels have produced a wine that has remarkable structural integrity despite its mere 11.5% alcohol. The precise, almost mathematically exact acidity (5.8 g/l) forms the backbone, around which aromas of citrus fruits - especially Meyer limes - and a subtle hint of white pepper wind their way. The moderate residual sugar (6 g/l) is perfectly integrated and gives the wine substance without compromising its dry character.

What characterises this Muscat is its grip on the palate - a tactile quality that testifies to the careful work in the vineyard and the respectful handling of the fruit. The wine possesses an inner tension, a dialectical relationship between freshness and depth, between immediate accessibility and contemplative complexity. It is a wine that, for all its aromatic expressiveness, never loses sight of its origins and identity - a picture-book Muscat that carries the essence of the Wachau in every drop.

General information

The 2022 vintage in the Wachau benefited from a warm summer with sufficient rainfall, which led to optimal physiological ripeness of the grapes. The loess soils on Danube gravel, characteristic of this region, give the wine its distinctive mineral character. The decision in favour of spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts and ageing in large wooden barrels underlines the winemaker's desire to preserve the authenticity of the terroir. Bottling in April 2023 allowed the wine to develop its flavours harmoniously without losing any of its freshness.

Food pairing suggestions

The vibrant aroma and precise acidity structure predestine this Muscat for refined dishes with subtle spice and textural contrasts:

Prawn tempura with wakame and lime - The crispy coating of the tempura and the salty sea freshness of the wakame form a perfect counterpoint to the floral expressiveness of the wine.

Crayfish with Meyer lemons and fennel pollen - The delicate sweetness of the crayfish and the aromatic complexity of the fennel pollen harmonise wonderfully with the precise acidity structure of the Muscatelier.

Salad of yellow beetroot, nectarines and almonds - The earthy sweetness of the yellow beetroot, the juicy fruitiness of the nectarines and the nutty depth of the almonds reflect the multi-layered flavours of the wine and create a taste experience of remarkable coherence.
