Wine Description for Syrah VdF 2022 from Maison Stephan
- Colour & Appearance
- Dense purple with violet reflections and a bright rim – a visual promise of youth and vitality.
- Nose
- A fascinating aromatic profile that combines the cool elegance of the northern Rhône with Mediterranean spice. Morello cherry and sour cherry dominate the acid-driven fruit palette, supported by elderberry, raspberry and blackcurrant. Earthy notes of damp forest floor and undergrowth lend depth, whilst juniper, pine cone and rosemary reveal the wine’s Mediterranean soul. Subtle hints of warm leather, liquorice and dark chocolate round off the complex bouquet.
- Palate
- Here the modern interpretation of the Syrah grape reveals itself in its finest form. At just 12.5% alcohol, the wine unfolds remarkable intensity without any heaviness. The acid-driven fruit flows silkily across the palate, carried by a fine, elegant tannin that caresses rather than demands. The wilder, balsamic elements remain discreetly in the background – a sign of restraint and elegance.
- Finish
- Long-lasting and characterised by a floral aromatics that comes as a surprise. Only in the aftertaste do the earthy, spicy components flash through, leaving a lasting impression of complexity.
- Terroir & Origin
- The 2.5 hectares are distributed across the hilly vineyard sites of Condrieu, Verin and Roussillon. Weathered alluvial deposits, granite and glacial moraine form a heterogeneous subsoil that gives the wine its multi-layered character. The vines, planted in 2010, deliver moderate yields of approximately 40 hl/ha.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Following cold maceration of whole grapes, fermentation takes place largely destemmed using the semi-carbonic method with regular remontage. Eight months maturation in concrete tank, natural sedimentation, minimal sulphiting – a purist vinification without additives that preserves fruit clarity.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Grilled flank steak with roasted tomatoes, Mediterranean vegetable pan with braised blackberries or beetroot carpaccio with sour cherries and dill – the wine demonstrates its versatility with both meat and vegetarian dishes.
- Special Features
- A Syrah that perfectly captures the zeitgeist: inviting to drink, elegant, with moderate alcohol and without any heaviness. The combination of freshness and complexity makes it the ideal companion for spontaneous moments of enjoyment.
