Scheurebe

Also known as: Sämling 88 (breeder’s designation)

Scheurebe is a German crossing from 1916 – Georg Scheu combined Riesling with Bukettrebe, and the result is striking. The grape variety develops an aromatic profile that polarises: blackcurrant, pink grapefruit, sometimes almost tropical notes, underpinned by an acidity that doesn’t negotiate. Those seeking balance must be patient – the grape needs time on the vine, but also restraint in the cellar.

At Johannes Zillinger in Weinviertel, it becomes clear that the grape variety isn’t limited to German slate soils. M. Schädler - Steffen Mugler in the Palatinate also works with the variety – in a region where Scheurebe has been taken seriously for decades, not just as a sweet wine reserve.
