Malvasia

Malvasia grape – Historical watercolour from Viala & Vermorel Ampélographie (1901)

Also known as: Malvoisie (France), Malmsey (England, historical), Malvasia delle Lipari (Sicily)

Malvasia is not a single grape variety, but a family. Dozens of genetically distinct grapes bear this name – united by their Mediterranean character and a history reaching back to ancient Greece. What they share: floral aromas, often a hint of bitter almond on the finish, and a natural inclination towards sweet wines.

On the Aeolian Islands, Tenuta di Castellaro vinifies Malvasia delle Lipari in its classic form – golden yellow, concentrated, with apricot and orange blossom. In Rioja, Tentenublo uses ancient Malvasia vines for structured white wines beyond the usual Viura dominance. And in Tuscany, Ampeleia demonstrates how exciting the grape can be in a blend.
