Wine description for Saignée des Tempêtées Rosé de Saignée Brut Nature 2018 by Tarlant

Colour & Appearance
Transparent yet intensely saignée-red with fine, lively perlage – a rosé Champagne that confidently displays its origins from maceration time.
Nose
Expressive, complex bouquet of candied rose and violet petals, blood orange and kumquat zest. Complemented by pomegranate juice, wild strawberries and redcurrants, interwoven with fine herbal and mineral notes – an aromatic kaleidoscope of impressive precision.
Palate
The texture is chalky and cool, with a brilliant, almost surprising acidity – remarkable for the hottest vintage in a hundred years. Bone-dry and finely structured, as Tarlant philosophy demands. With air contact, a fascinating association with Kriek with Schaarbeek cherries emerges – a Belgian reference that perfectly captures the interplay of fruit, acidity and mineral tension.
Terroir & Origin
From the single vineyard site „Tempêtée“ in Œuilly: 13% slope, north-east facing, 158 metres altitude. The chalky clay fundamentally shapes the character of this Champagne. The vines were planted in 1981 by the Tarlant family – 13 different clones in 13 rows, a diversity that guarantees complexity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, harvested on 3 September 2018. Following 16 hours of maceration, slow gravity pressing, spontaneous fermentation and seven months on lees in Burgundy pièces. No malolactic fermentation, no dosage – pure expression of terroir and vintage. Bottled April 2019, disgorged June 2024. Only 3,700 bottles.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion: with main courses such as duck breast, tuna tataki or rare roasted lamb. Equally brilliant with not overly sweet desserts such as rhubarb tart or strawberry salad with basil. Also an excellent choice with hard cheese.
Special Features
A rosé de saignée of the highest calibre – Brut Nature without any dosage, proving that 2018 could produce great, fresh Champagnes despite the heat. The Tarlant philosophy in its purest form.
