Wine information

240 meters above sea level and up to 40 % steep is the Zellerweg at Schwarzer Herrgott - one of the oldest vineyard sites in Germany. It was first mentioned in the 8th century, but in the meantime it had not been able to keep its reputation and fell into oblivion. Not least thanks to Hans-Oliver Spanier, this has changed fundamentally. Today, it is clear that this site, which is located exactly on the border to the neighboring Palatinate and consists almost of pure limestone, is one of the most exciting Riesling sites in Germany.

Nose

Surely one of the darkest, deepest and most radical Großes Gewächse in Germany is created year after year in the Zellerweg at the Schwarzer Herrgott. When Hans-Oliver Spanier from liquid earth speaks when it comes to his way of making wines, then you can understand that with this Riesling to 100 %. It opens very slowly and only with a lot of patience - which is completely normal for such a wine that simply needs time. Then you first perceive a slightly oxidative note and then mainly citrus, stone and oyster shell, something salty iodine comes, dry herbs and even a hint of black berries.

Mouth

On the palate, the power, the pressure, the razor-sharp minerality, the crystal-clear, unadulterated acidity and the simultaneous incomprehensible relaxation and coherence that makes a great wine. It's like the time signature of a great jazz musician who can play extremely laid-back yet always stay in meter. Tart, juicy and citrusy fruit notes and a bit of mirabelle plum meet stony and earthy notes. The tannin makes for a striking texture, while the limestone-driven acidity has the jolting effect of a 9-volt battery. This is great, yet still in its infancy. The Zellerweg takes time.
