medium straw yellow - The interplay of the lack of humus, the extremely steep slope and the compulsion of the vines to penetrate very deeply into the rock layers makes the Pettenthal an archetype of terroir Riesling. Then one senses the fine nuances of citrusy, acidic fruit, of salty stone, then the wine tells of many complex layers, which it reveals more and more with air and in the large glass.

Wine information

As with all sites on the Rote Hang in Nierstein, the Pettenthal characterized by the Rotliegenden, a red weathered rock of shale and sandstone. The central parcel of Kühling-Gillot has a slope of more than 70 % and is thus the steepest site in the whole of Rheinhessen. Humus is hardly found in this vineyard, which is why the vines have to root deep into the rock.

Nose

The interplay of the lack of humus, the extreme steepness of the slope and the need for the vines to penetrate very deeply into the layers of rock makes the Pettenthal a prototype of the terroir Riesling. Here it is not about fruit, but about the liquefaction of a certain place, and that smells hardly of fruit, but of salty damp soil, of tobacco, smoke and flint as well as of like curry leaves and turmeric. If you wait a long time, you'll find something of red apple with its skin, a little pureclauden, citrus fruits and red currants.

This pronounced connection to the earth, the stone, to herbs and spices also characterizes the taste of this powerful wine. The Riesling from the Pettenthal caresses the palate with a slightly creamy texture, but above all it demands, sets conditions. One should already be completely in one's senses and concentrate on this wine, that is important. Then one senses the fine nuances of citrusy sour fruit, of salty stone, then the wine tells of many complex layers, which it reveals more and more with air and in the big glass. It is still at the beginning of its development, but already now one gets awe for this site and for this wine.
