Wine Description for Riesling Frauenberg GG 2024 from Battenfeld-Spanier

Character
The Frauenberg GG from Battenfeld-Spanier represents the new generation of top-tier Rheinhessen wines. The estate, which rose to become one of the region’s pioneers under the leadership of Hans-Oliver Spanier and his family, vinifies a Riesling here of remarkable precision and depth. The designation Großes Gewächs (Grand Cru) stands for dry single-vineyard wines of the highest quality from classified sites – a quality pyramid modelled on Burgundian principles. With a moderate 12.5% alcohol, this wine presents itself as a counterpoint to overripe, alcohol-driven styles.
Terroir & Origin
The Frauenberg near Hohen-Sülzen ranks among Rheinhessen’s most historically significant vineyards. The soils are characterised by limestone and marl, which lend the Riesling that mineral tension and structure for which this site is renowned. Rheinhessen, long underestimated, has reinvented itself as a quality region over the past two decades – Battenfeld-Spanier belongs to the driving forces behind this renaissance. The continental climate with warm summers and cool nights enables physiological ripeness whilst maintaining vibrant acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling finds its most authentic expression in Germany – no other grape variety can translate origin with such precision. Battenfeld-Spanier works uncompromisingly nature-oriented: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, extended ageing on fine lees, minimal intervention in the cellar. The 2024 vintage, still young, promises that ageing potential which distinguishes great Rieslings. The estate’s philosophy: restraint in the cellar, so that the terroir can speak.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A wine of this structure and complexity demands thoughtful accompaniment: pan-fried Arctic char with herb butter, scallops with cauliflower purée, boiled veal with horseradish, or aged Comté. The mineral freshness harmonises beautifully with Asian cuisine – such as dim sum or Thai curry with coconut milk. A wine that brings both finesse and substance.
