Wine Description for Riesling Doosberg Grosses Gewächs 2023 by Peter Jakob Kühn
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections – clear, brilliant and suffused with youthful freshness.
- Nose
- The nose opens with a fascinating interplay of ripe yellow fruit and cool spice: peach, mirabelle plum and golden-yellow pear form the fruity foundation, whilst subtle notes of turmeric and saffron provide warm, spicy elegance without ever tipping into opulence. With air, cubeb pepper, cardamom and allspice emerge, complemented by dried herbs such as marjoram and sage as well as an ethereal hint of lemon thyme. A fine note of freshly chopped almonds lends the bouquet composure and depth. Powerful, cool-edged and of remarkable harmony.
- Palate
- On the palate, an energetic, juice-driven Grosses Gewächs unfolds, immediately inviting you to drink. Spice and herbal notes dominate the structure, whilst the fruit plays an elegant supporting role. A cool, finely chiselled minerality runs through the wine, carried by a pulsating interplay of acidity pressure and spice. The texture is taut, clear and vibrant – a Riesling of inner tension and great precision.
- Finish
- Bright, pure-toned and long – the finish is unassuming in its grandeur, yet remarkable in its depth of expression. 3.6 g/l residual sugar meets a lively acidity of 7.4 g/l: the balance is flawless.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Doosberg lies on the eastern edge of Oestrich in the Rheingau, at approximately 120 metres elevation with a 15% south-facing slope. The subsoil of lime-rich loess loam, terrace sediments from the primordial sea and interspersed Taunus quartzites lend the wine its mineral character. The exposed, wind-open location ensures cool, slow grape ripening – the foundation for tension and precision.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Riesling, spontaneously fermented with natural yeasts. Whole-bunch pressing, gentle and slow. Maturation for 16 months on full lees in traditional Stück barrels (1,200 l) and Doppelstück barrels (2,400 l). Alcohol: 11.5% vol. – lean, precise, spot-on.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Ideal with grilled turbot with herb butter, scallops with cauliflower purée or goat’s cheese with wild herb salad. Also a classic companion to Wiener Schnitzel or Asian-spiced chicken with lemongrass.
- Special Characteristics
- A Grosses Gewächs that does not loudly proclaim its greatness, but quietly proves it. Peter Jakob Kühn ranks among the most consistent biodynamic practitioners in the Rheingau – this Doosberg 2023 is an impressive testament to what patience, craftsmanship and extraordinary terroir can achieve together.
