Info about the wine

The grapes come from a north-western slope, the lowest part of the Tannenberg. Mica schist with quartzite overlain by shell limestone predominates here. The soil is light and tends to ripen early despite the north-facing slope.

Info about the expansion

Must fermentation with one year storage on the full yeast in 800 litre barrels.

Color

Bright, medium golden yellow.

Nose

The 2017 Ried Bergschmallister Chardonnay displays a distinctive aroma of matchstick notes, dried pastries, toasted almonds and cool limestone. With the necessary oxygen, subtle notes of quince, citrus and apricot emerge. At the moment, its aroma is clearly dominated by an enchanting mineral depth, which reminds of very great reference wines from Burgundy.

Palate

Juicy fruit notes of quince, ripe pear and mango, furthermore peanut combine with finesse-rich acidity and pleasant bitter note on the tongue. Much precision and by the long yeast contact impressive fullness and length. Still in its infancy - a Chardonnay with storage potential for the next few years. Who wants to enjoy it in the current stage should decant it and drink it from a Burgundy glass.
