Wine Description for Pouilly-Fuissé Climat „En Chatenay“ Zen AOC 2022 from La Soufrandière

Colour & Appearance
Pale golden yellow with brilliant clarity – a Chardonnay that announces its freshness and youthfulness visually.
Nose
The bouquet unfolds a fascinating complexity: pastry with lemon curd meets salt lemons and the dual dimension of green and yellow pears. These are joined by a delicate lanolin note, a hint of smoke and subtly roasted hazelnuts. The aromatics feel ripe and juicy, yet remain refreshingly clear.
Palate
On the palate, this Pouilly-Fuissé shows itself at its best: juicy, bright and lively with an agile acidity that makes the wine practically dance. Herbal-zesty and citrus notes combine with a fine salinity to create an extraordinarily mouth-watering experience. This is pure, unadorned Chardonnay without pretension – instead crystalline clear and precise in its bright aromas.
Finish
The aftertaste is refreshing and mineral with lingering citrus freshness and a fine saline-herbal component that invites the next sip.
Terroir & Origin
The tiny 0.69-hectare parcel in the Climat En Chatenay sits at 250 metres altitude below the Roche de Vergisson with a north-east exposure. The reddish-brown clay on limestone decisively shapes the character of this wine. The 55-year-old vines share the vineyard site with the renowned Comtes Lafon – a neighbourhood that speaks for itself.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Chardonnay, hand-harvested on 2 September 2022. Spontaneous fermentation following whole-bunch pressing, 17 months ageing in used barrels and neutral vats. Complete malolactic fermentation, minimal sulphur (21 mg/l total sulphur). A textbook example of natural, respectful winemaking.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with grilled oysters with hot sauce butter, langoustines with young garlic and lemongrass or roasted yellow beetroot with pears and pistachios. The acidity and minerality harmonise beautifully with seafood and light vegetable dishes.
Special Features
A wine that prioritises terroir authenticity over embellishment. The Bret brothers of La Soufrandière prove that great Burgundy Chardonnay need not shout about oak, but rather convince through clarity and precision.
