Wine Description for Planals Rouge VdF 2023 by Matassa

Colour & Appearance
A delicate, almost translucent rosehip red with rusty reflections and a pale rim – the colouring already reveals the radical lightness of this wine.
Nose
The bouquet is characterised by captivating Mediterranean wildness: rosehip and sour cherry meet forest berries, hay and wild herbs. The aromatics recall a walk through the garriguelavender, rosemary, thyme, pine groves and almond blossom alternate. Subtle roasted notes and cold smoke alongside chopped almonds lend the whole an ethereal, almost spiritual dimension.
Palate
With just 11.5% alcohol, this wine demonstrates that greatness has nothing to do with extraction. Robust and compact whilst simultaneously floating with lightness. The acidity never feels imposed, but rather organically integrated and stimulates salivation with shy elegance. The extreme slenderness costs some fruit fullness, but gains in tension and drinkability.
Finish
Wild and masculine in its aftertaste, with lingering herbal notes and mineral freshness.
Terroir & Origin
From Roussillon, that magical region between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean, where Tom Lubbe with his winery Matassa counts among the pioneers of natural winemaking. The wines of Matassa are an expression of extreme terroir and uncompromising philosophy.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grenache and Grenache Gris in radically minimalist vinification – minimal extraction, no fining, no sulphur or only minimally dosed. The result is a wine that prioritises transparency over power.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Perfect with grilled fish, herb salads, goat’s cheese or Provençal vegetables. Also excellent with charcuterie or grilled rabbit with thyme. A wine that celebrates lightness at the table.
Special Features
The Planals Rouge is a statement against the over-extraction of modern winemaking. A wine for purists who appreciate elegance over opulence – and who understand that less is often more.
