Tasting note
Character
A Pinot Noir of quiet elegance, combining the cool clarity of Southern Styria with the substance of mature vines. The 13 per cent alcohol promises a medium-bodied palate, supported by juicy acidity and fine-grained tannins. In the glass, notes of red cherries, wild berries and a subtle herbal spice emerge, evoking the rolling hills of Styria.
Terroir & Origin
The Tement estate in Ehrenhausen has placed Southern Styria firmly on the international wine map – primarily through Sauvignon Blanc, yet the region’s limestone-rich soils and dramatic steep slopes also offer ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Nearly 100 hectares extend across both sides of the Slovenian border. Since 2022, the estate has been fully biodynamic according to Demeter standards, with conversion having begun as early as 2017 – a consistent evolution of its respect for the soil.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pinot Noir is regarded as the most demanding red grape variety in the world – sensitive in cultivation yet unmistakable in expression. The designation Alte Reben indicates deeply rooted vines that yield concentrated, complex fruit. Restraint prevails in Tement’s cellar: spontaneous fermentation, extended lees ageing and the careful use of large wooden casks define the house style. The result is wines marked by tension between fruit and minerality.
Food Pairings
The refined structure and lively acidity make this Pinot Noir a versatile everyday wine. It pairs beautifully with pan-roasted duck breast with red cabbage, saddle of venison with lingonberries or porcini risotto. Even Steirischer Backhendlsalat – the regional speciality – finds a worthy partner in it. For pure enjoyment, a serving temperature of 16 to 18 degrees is recommended.
