Wine description for Olla Blanc VdF 2024 1500ml Magnum from Matassa

Character

The Olla Blanc in an impressive magnum format is a testimony to the uncompromising natural wine philosophy of Tom Lubbe at Matassa. This cuvée from Macabeu and Muscatel epitomises the rugged beauty of Roussillon - a wine of remarkable transparency with a restrained 10.5% alcohol, which translates the barren landscape of the French south into liquid form.

Terroir & craftsmanship

In the windswept hinterland of Perpignan, where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean, Matassa cultivates vineyards on barren slate soils. The Mediterranean conditions with intense sunshine and the moderating influence of the Tramontane characterise the grapes. The Olla Blanc is vinified with minimal intervention - spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, no filtration, no fining and only minimal, if any, addition of sulphur.

Cultural context

Als Vin de France declared, this wine deliberately frees itself from the restrictions of the appellation to allow a purer expression of the place.

Food pairing suggestions

With its Subtle residual sweetness and moderate alcohol content, this wine is ideal for Mediterranean cuisine - think grilled fish with fennel vegetables, seafood with saffron or a classic bouillabaisse. The magnum bottle predestines it for relaxed gatherings at the table, where it can unfold over the course of the evening.
