Wine Description for Im Weingebirge Grüner Veltliner Smaragd trocken 2009 from Nikolaihof

Character
Nikolaihof ranks among the legendary estates of the Wachau and is Austria’s oldest winery. Since 1971, the Saahs family has worked according to biodynamic Demeter principles – a pioneering achievement in the region. The Smaragd category represents the Wachau’s most powerful, ripest grapes, producing wines of depth and exceptional ageing potential. The 2009 vintage is considered excellent, characterised by a warm summer and ideal autumn conditions that yielded concentrated, expressive wines.
Terroir & Origin
The “Im Weingebirge” site belongs to the steep slopes of Mautern, where ancient terrace walls structure the precipitous hillsides. The name references the historical significance of these vineyards. The primary rock soils of weathered gneiss and mica schist shape the mineral character of the wines. The Wachau’s Pannonian climate with cool nights and the influence of the Danube create ideal conditions for Grüner Veltliner with tension and elegance. Nikolaihof cultivates its historic parcels without herbicides or synthetic fertilisers, which underscores the authentic terroir expression.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Grüner Veltliner is Austria’s flagship variety and achieves its most complex expression in the Wachau. The variety combines freshness with substance, spicy notes with stony minerality. As a Smaragd, the wine is harvested at natural full ripeness and traditionally matured in large wooden casks, which allows it time to develop without masking the fruit. Nikolaihof’s biodynamic approach produces wines that appear vibrant and energetic, with a particular inner tension. After more than a decade of bottle age, the tertiary complexity of mature Veltliner reveals itself.
Food Pairing Recommendations
A mature Smaragd of this calibre demands sophisticated cuisine: sweetbreads with morels, pan-fried pike-perch or turbot with saffron sauce. The structure and maturity harmonise with roasted poultry, such as poularde with truffle. The wine also shows its class alongside aged mountain cheese or creamy risotto variations. Austrian cuisine naturally suggests itself: Tafelspitz or Wiener Schnitzel from veal.
