Wine Description for Nero Ossidiana IGT 2017 by Tenuta di Castellaro

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, dark cherry red with bright reflections – a visual promise of energy and finesse.
Nose
Fascinatingly ambivalent, this Sicilian presents itself: Dark morello cherries and blackberries meet surprisingly bright white currants and jasmine blossoms. Spicy notes of black pepper, cinnamon and star anise lend festive warmth, whilst the floral and fruity notes retain a Mediterranean lightness. Subtle roasted aromas from wood ageing round out the complex bouquet.
Palate
The entry is elegant and cool, the volcanic origin unmistakable: A mineral grip runs through the fleshy texture. Contrary to the dark expectation, lighter fruit aromas now dominate – rosehip and currants lead a playful dance. The delicate tannin supports discreetly, without dominating. Remarkable is the juiciness that tempts you to keep drinking. In the finish, oregano and dark stone fruit join in.
Finish
Medium length with spicy notes and a fine mineral coolness that leaves the palate refreshed.
Terroir & Origin
From the Aeolian Islands off Sicily, grown at 350 metres altitude. The volcanic and sandy soil fundamentally shapes the character of this wine and gives it its characteristic minerality and elegance.
Grape Variety & Vinification
An unusual blend of 90% Corinto (Korinthiaki) and 10% Nero d’Avola. Spontaneous fermentation and one year’s ageing in wooden barrels, followed by stabilisation in steel tank. Unfined and unfiltered bottling – an authentic expression of terroir.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The versatility of this wine makes it the ideal companion for open ravioli with duck leg and baked plums, pan-fried red mullet with Mediterranean vegetables or classic Orecchiette Puttanesca. Its balance between power and elegance harmonises with both robust and more delicate dishes.
Special Features
The rare Corinto grape variety, combined with natural vinification methods, makes this wine an authentic discovery. At 13% alcohol, it remains remarkably drinkable and light-footed despite its aromatic complexity.
