Wine Description for Mussbacher Eselshaut Spätburgunder VDP Erste Lage 2021 by Christmann
- Colour & Appearance
- Luminous, medium ruby red with garnet reflections. Clear and brilliant in the glass, this Spätburgunder displays the typical transparency of a Pinot Noir vinified in the Burgundian style.
- Nose
- Seductive and precise at the same time. Redcurrant and sour cherry dominate, underlaid by fine notes of forest floor and undergrowth. With aeration, subtle hints of rose petals and a delicate herbal spiciness develop. The biodynamic cultivation is reflected in the purity and clarity of the fruit aromas.
- Palate
- Elegant and full of tension. The wine literally dances on the tongue with a silky texture and fine-grained tannins. The cherry fruit is carried by a vibrant, cool-climate acidity that lends freshness and length to the wine. A moderate 13% alcohol ensures balance without heaviness. The palate reveals a mineral precision reminiscent of damp limestone – a fingerprint of the Erste Lage Eselshaut.
- Finish
- Long and vibrant with a lingering echo of fruit and a fine herbal spiciness. The minerality carries through to the very end, leaving a salty touch that invites the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Eselshaut vineyard site in Mußbach benefits from the ideal conditions of the Palatinate Mittelhaardt: warm enough for ripeness, cool enough for elegance. The limestone soils bestow the wine with its characteristic minerality and finesse.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Biodynamically farmed Spätburgunder from the VDP Erste Lage. Consistently vinified according to biodynamic principles since 2004, with the aim of bringing the vineyard into the glass. The vinification is low-intervention to let the origin speak for itself.
- Food Pairings
- Superb with pink-roasted fillet of veal, duck breast with cherry sauce or mature Gruyère. Also an excellent choice with mushroom dishes featuring porcini or chestnuts.
- Special Features
- VDP Erste Lage from one of Germany’s most renowned biodynamic estates. Steffen Christmann leads the estate in the seventh generation and is counted among the top winemakers of the Pfalz.
