Wine Description for Ölberg-Hart Königsbach Riesling Grosses Gewächs 2022 by Christmann
- Colour & Appearance
- Sparkling golden yellow in the glass – a Riesling that hints at its substance from the outset.
- Nose
- Initially closed, as befits a young Grosses Gewächs. The limestone minerality dominates at first with cool precision. With air contact, a fascinating interplay of aromas unfolds: wood pear, apple and apricot meet exotic notes of physalis, mango and kiwi. Subtle spice from white pepper, coriander and mustard powder lend unexpected complexity.
- Palate
- Powerful and full-bodied – this Riesling is no lightweight. The juicy fruit merges with a saline minerality and an acidity that structures without dominating. The 12% alcohol is perfectly integrated and underscores the elegance despite the fullness.
- Finish
- Long and characterised by a stimulating bitter note that doesn’t disturb but rather invigorates. A finish that calls for food and awakens anticipation for the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Hart in Königsbach’s Ölberg is a VDP.Grosse Lage and the heart of this parcel. The heavy tertiary limestone marl (Terra fusca) with bunter sandstone gravel fundamentally shapes the character of this wine. The exposed location at the Haardt ridge benefits from early morning sun and cool air currents from the Klausental – ideal conditions for mineral Rieslings with tension.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Riesling, selectively hand-harvested. Spontaneous fermentation in large wooden cask – Christmann relies on natural yeasts and traditional maturation that gives terroir room to express itself.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- This wine demands substantial cuisine: monkfish wrapped in bacon on pearl barley risotto, lobster with tarragon butter and ribbon pasta or surprisingly also smoked tofu with wild herb salad. By all means decant and serve at not too cold a temperature in large Burgundy glasses.
- Special Features
- A Grosses Gewächs that rewards patience. The 2022 Ölberg-Hart already displays impressive complexity, but will develop considerably further in the coming years. Christmann Rieslings are ageing classics – this one has at least a decade ahead of it.
