Wine Description for „Aus den Lagen“ Riesling 2023 1500ml Magnum by Christmann

Character
The Christmann estate from Gimmeldingen ranks among the absolute elite of the Palatinate and is renowned for its uncompromising, terroir-driven style. The „Aus den Lagen“ Riesling embodies the philosophy of the house in ideal fashion: a wine that unites the diversity of different parcels into a harmonious whole. The magnum bottle moreover promises a slower, more elegant development and makes this wine a wise choice for medium-term cellaring. With moderate 12% alcohol and a dry orientation, here finesse takes precedence over power.
Terroir & Origin
The Palatinate, particularly the Mittelhaardt around Gimmeldingen, offers ideal conditions for Riesling: sheltered vineyard sites at the Haardt ridge, limestone and sandstone soils that impart minerality and structure, as well as a mild, almost Mediterranean microclimate. Christmann manages his vineyards according to biodynamic principles and allows the soils time to transfer their characteristics into the grapes. The 2023 vintage brought, after a challenging spring, a warm, dry summer that produced healthy, aromatically ripe grapes with vibrant acidity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Riesling is the pinnacle of German winemaking art, and Christmann masters it with consummate skill. Vinification follows the principle of minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, maturation in traditional wooden casks, no technical frills. The result is wines of crystalline clarity and vibrant energy that express their origin unfiltered. The dry style underscores the straightforward precision for which the estate is renowned.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A versatile companion to fish dishes of all kinds, from pan-fried char to scallops. Excellent also with poultry in light sauces, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce or a goat’s cheese salad. The minerality and freshness make it the ideal partner for modern, light cuisine.
