Wine Description for Meursault Sous la Velle AOC 2023 by Rémi Jobard
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale lemon yellow with luminous green reflections – youthful, fresh and of remarkable clarity.
- Nose
- Magnificently expressive: icing sugar-dusted lemon sweets meet lemon curd and yellow apple skins. Beneath lies a seductive layer of light brown toasted toast with salted butter, Moroccan preserved lemons and salted almonds. A citric Chardonnay with opulent, extract-rich core and open-hearted presence – Meursault in its most accessible form.
- Palate
- Powerful and juicy on the attack, with rich extract and austere contour. The citric aromatics continue consistently: from bitter citrus oil to brilliant, salt-balanced acidity. Forceful and multi-layered, with fine nutty notes that provide creamy melt and solid backbone. A wine with substance and tension in equal measure.
- Finish
- Long, precise and of impressive persistence. The saline minerality carries far, underpinned by nutty nuances and fresh citrus bitterness.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Sous la Velle lies directly at the lower foot of the slope in Meursault on clay and limestone soils. This combination gives the wine its characteristic blend of power and finesse – typical of the finest village sites in the locality.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Chardonnay, selectively hand-harvested and gently pressed. Spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, maturation over twelve months in large Stockinger barrels and used pièces (maximum 20% new), followed by six months in stainless steel tank. Bottled unfiltered with minimal sulphur addition – a purist approach that gives maximum expression to the terroir.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Scallops with lemon butter, pan-fried turbot, lobster with saffron sauce, calf’s sweetbreads in morel sauce, Comté or aged Beaufort. The wine also pairs well with richer preparations featuring butter and cream.
- Special Characteristics
- Rémi Jobard is among the most reliable producers in Meursault. His minimalist approach – large barrels, little new oak, no filtration – allows the purity of the terroir to speak. The 2023 vintage shows remarkable freshness and drinkability despite 14% alcohol.
