Wine Description for Le Verger AOP 2023 by Luneau-Papin
- Colour & Appearance
- Pale golden yellow with silvery reflections – a classic appearance for Muscadet that promises freshness and elegance.
- Nose
- Restrained and precise: apple, lemon zest and pear are carried by pronounced yeast notes, almond and hay. With air contact, the wine opens up and reveals elderflower, fine slate nuances, sea breeze and shell notes. A harmonious aromatic profile that combines finesse and mineral depth – typical of the finest Muscadet vineyard sites.
- Palate
- Juicy and supple, yet surprisingly low in acidity for a 2023. The wine glides across the palate with perceptible grip and saline notes – a texture that immediately recalls its origins. This salty minerality makes it an ideal partner for earthy vegetables and everything from the sea. Umami qualities are built in here.
- Finish
- Medium length with persistent salinity and fine bitterness reminiscent of almond shells. The yeast notes linger and leave a refreshing, slightly mineral impression.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vines have been planted since 1984 in the village of Vallet on one of the historical treasures of the Luneau-Papin family. The plot sits on a hillside with a 500-metre-wide granite band that gently slopes towards the gneiss of the neighbouring village of Le Landreau. The bedrock of granite and gneiss with two micas from the Armorican Massif decisively shapes the mineral character of this wine.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Melon de Bourgogne, the autochthonous grape variety of Muscadet, displays its full elegance here. Ageing on the lees gives the wine texture, complexity and that characteristic creaminess, without masking its crisp freshness.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Oysters, scallops, seafood of all kinds, grilled sea bass, pike-perch with butter, but also root vegetables, asparagus and goat’s cheese. A versatile companion with pronounced umami potential.
- Special Features
- A historic parcel between two villages, traversed by a river – a terroir that imparts complexity and depth. Luneau-Papin ranks among the top producers of Muscadet and demonstrates with this wine that the region has far more to offer than simple bistro wines.
