Wine Description for Le Verger AOP 2023 1500ml Magnum by Luneau-Papin

Character
Luneau-Papin is among the most renowned producers in the Muscadet region and embodies with Le Verger the purist elegance of Melon de Bourgogne. The magnum format underscores the ambition of this wine, which far transcends simple bistro wines. Here one finds mineral precision paired with subtle fruit and that saline freshness which characterises great Loire wines.
Terroir & Origin
The estate manages parcels on the characteristic gneiss soils of Sèvre-et-Maine, that very heart of Muscadet south-east of Nantes. These ancient metamorphic rocks impart their typical stony minerality and tension to the wines. The Atlantic climate with cool sea breezes ensures moderate temperatures and a long growing season, which gives the often underestimated Melon de Bourgogne time to develop complexity. The Luneau-Papin family has cultivated a terroir-focused approach here for generations, one based on respectful vineyard work and minimalist intervention.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Melon de Bourgogne, originally from Burgundy, found its true home on the Loire. Luneau-Papin vinifies traditionally with extended lees ageing (sur lie), which lends the wine texture, depth and that subtle creaminess without compromising freshness. The 2023 vintage benefited from a balanced growing season. The magnum bottle provides ideal ageing conditions and extends the cellaring potential of this already remarkably age-worthy wine.
Food Pairing Suggestions
A classic companion to oysters, seafood and shellfish – the natural connection between Atlantic cuisine and Loire wine. Excellent also with grilled fish, regional goat’s cheese or steamed sole fillet. The saline minerality harmonises perfectly with sushi and raw fish, whilst the structure also carries richer preparations with butter or cream sauces.
