The story of Guillaume Sorbe
Guillaume Sorbe, the talented winemaker behind Les Poëte, has his roots deep in the Reuilly appellation in the Centre-Loire. The son of a winegrower who also worked as a chef and sommelier, Guillaume laid the foundations for his own estate in 2001. Today the property covers 17 hectares, of which only 6.45 are planted with vines. The rest? A beautiful stretch of nature, home to animals. La Revue du Vin de France praises the wines of Les Poëte as some of the most ambitious in the Centre-Loire.
An independent spirit on his own path
Guillaume could have taken over the family estate, Jean-Michel Sorbe, in Brinay. Instead he chose to go his own way. After the family estate was sold in 1999, he studied hotel and restaurant management as well as sommellerie in Bourges. His career began in gourmet restaurants and later took him to renowned establishments as a sommelier. Alongside this he tended his grandfather’s vines and studied oenology in Beaune. In 2007 he finally founded his own Domaine Les Poëte, honouring his grandmother’s maiden name, Esther Poëte.
An ecosystem called Les Poëte
Guillaume takes an ecological, holistic approach. He believes in biodiversity, which is why his estate is home not only to vines but also to horses, sheep, bees and chickens. His vineyards are spread across 28 parcels, planted with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc among others.
The art of winemaking
In Guillaume’s cellar each of the 28 parcels is vinified and aged separately, with minimal intervention. Most of the wines ferment in stainless steel, while younger cuvées such as Le S des Poëte and the Pouilly-Fumé mature in tank and partly in barrel. The crus deserve special mention: they age in 400- and 600-litre casks and are released only three years after the harvest. The Pinot Noir, fermented as whole bunches, is especially noteworthy, as it is the only wine in the range to show any imprint of oak.
Sorbe’s wines are sensual, powerful and expressive throughout. Le S des Poëte radiates this sensuality, while the Pouilly-Fumé impresses with its intensity. Toison d’Or is an outstanding Pinot Gris, and Odyssée, a Pinot Noir, shows the impressive potential of this grape in the region.
