Wine description for Im Weingebirge, Grüner Veltliner Federspiel trocken 2006 from Nikolaihof

Colour & appearance

Surprisingly youthful for its age, this 18-year-old Grüner Veltliner presents itself in a clear straw yellow colour with subtle golden reflections. The remarkable clarity testifies to the exceptional ageing potential of this grape variety in the right hands.

Nose

A fascinating bouquet of mature complexity. Dried apricots and Candied citrus peel combine with subtle notes of white pepper - the classic Veltliner characteristic that is still present even after all these years. There are also hints of beeswax, almonds and a hint of mineral saltiness that testifies to the loess soils of the Wachau.

Palate

The true mastery of the Nikolaihof is evident on the palate. The Federspiel category, traditionally known for its medium body, has developed into an impressively balanced wine. The youthful acidity structure is still present, but perfectly integrated into a body that has gained depth and silky texture through maturity. Notes of yellow stone fruit, Camomile and a subtle spiciness glide over the tongue and end in a remarkably long, salty finish.

General information

Nikolaihof, one of the oldest wineries in Austria with a proven winegrowing tradition dating back to the year 470, has been working biodynamically for decades. The "Im Weingebirge" vineyard is one of the Wachau's historic gems. This "Archive Release" from 2024 impressively demonstrates the extraordinary ageing potential of Austrian white wines.

Food pairing suggestions

The developed complexity of this mature Veltliner harmonises perfectly with fried fish in clarified butter, Sweetbreads or creamy mushroom dishes. Also to Asian-inspired dishes with moderate flavour, it forms a fascinating counterpoint.

Special features

An impressive contemporary document of Austrian wine culture. The screw cap has perfectly preserved the freshness - an early proof of the quality of this type of closure for long-lasting wines. With 12% alcohol, it represents the elegant, restrained style that is very popular again today. A wine that shows that great Grüner Veltliners can not only age, but actually gain depth and character in the process.
