Tasting note
Character
Arianna Occhipinti is one of the most influential voices in modern Sicily – a winemaker who convinces quietly rather than loudly. Her Il Frappato is the purest distillation of this philosophy: a wine of remarkable lightness and transparency, demonstrating that Sicily has far more to offer than heavy, sun-saturated red wines. With just 12.5% alcohol, it sits in a category that would have seemed scarcely possible on this island just a few decades ago.
Terroir & Origin
The vineyards lie in south-eastern Sicily, in the municipality of Vittoria, on volcanic-influenced sandy soils that provide the vines with both drainage and mineral depth. The Mediterranean climate – hot, dry summers, mild spring – is tempered by cool nights and sea breezes, which preserve the natural freshness and aromatics of the Frappato grape. Occhipinti’s vineyard work follows biodynamic principles: the vines are respected, not dominated.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Frappato is one of Sicily’s most charming indigenous grape varieties – pale in colour, aromatic, naturally high in acidity and low in tannins. In Occhipinti’s hands, it becomes an expression of minimalist winemaking: spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, gentle ageing without excessive oak, deliberate avoidance of technical interventions. The wine should speak – not the cellar.
Food Pairing Suggestions
The lightness and vibrant acidity make this wine a versatile table companion. It harmonises beautifully with grilled fish, Pasta alla Norma or a Sicilian caponata. Equally convincing with antipasti, goat’s cheese or light charcuterie boards. A wine that invites you to pour another glass – and to linger longer at the table.
