Wine description for Il Corzanello Bianco IGT 2023 from Corzano e Paterno
In the rolling hills of Tuscany, where olive trees and cypresses characterise the landscape, the Corzano e Paterno winery stands like a witness to bygone eras. What began in the late 1960s as a rescue mission of a neglected estate by the Swiss architect Wendel Gelpke has developed into one of the region's most remarkable wine stories. The Il Corzanello Bianco is a fascinating chapter in this story - an unconventional blend that epitomises the courage to be independent in a region that is otherwise famous for its red wines.
Visual impression
In the glass, the Corzanello Bianco 2023 has a bright, straw-yellow colour with subtle greenish reflections, reminiscent of the early morning light that falls through the Tuscan olive groves. The wine's viscosity testifies to its structure and considerable alcohol content of 14%, without being heavy.
Nose
The nose immediately reveals the complexity of this unusual cuvée. The Chardonnay brings ripe yellow apples and a hint of pear, while the Petit Manseng provides exotic notes of passion fruit and candied citrus peel. The Semillon contributes with subtle hints of beeswax, white flowers and a mineral component reminiscent of sun-warmed limestone. It is a world of flavours that is both Mediterranean and surprisingly fresh - a reflection of the cool nights that provide the necessary acidity in the grapes, even in the Tuscan summer.
Palate
On the palate, the wine shows an impressive balance between fullness and precision. The moderate residual sweetness is perfectly integrated into the structure and is supported by a lively but not dominant acidity. The Chardonnay gives the wine body and creamy texture, while Petit Manseng and Semillon provide tension and aromatic complexity. Notes of white peach, lemongrass and a hint of Mediterranean herbs unfold in waves. The finish is remarkably long, with a subtle saltiness reminiscent of the not-too-distant coast, inviting the next sip.
General information
Today, the 140-hectare vineyard, of which 18 hectares are planted with vines, is run by Aljoscha Goldschmidt, the founder's nephew, together with his niece Arianna. Their philosophy of calm and patience is reflected in each of their wines. The Corzanello Bianco is not a by-product, but a special concern of the winery - proof that Tuscany is capable of more than just great red wines.
The grapes for this wine grow on chalky soils with clay inclusions, which give the wines a characteristic minerality. Hand-picking and gentle processing are a matter of course, as is the avoidance of excessive use of wood in order to preserve the freshness and character of the grape varieties.
Food pairing suggestions
This multi-layered white wine is an ideal accompaniment to Tuscan cuisine, especially for dishes that bridge the gap between land and sea. It harmonises perfectly with Spaghetti alle vongole, Grilled sea bass with fennel vegetables or a classic Risotto ai funghi porcini. Also to a plate Pecorino It is an eloquent conversationalist when served at various stages of maturity with a little honey and figs. The structure of the wine also allows it to be paired with richer dishes such as Rabbit in white wine sauce or even a Vitello tonnato to harmonise.
Il Corzanello Bianco 2023 is a wine that makes you think - about the diversity of Tuscany, about the possibilities that arise when tradition meets innovation, and not least about the quiet beauty of a region that has inspired people for centuries.
