Tasting note
Info:
The 2023 vintage had a particularly long and wet winter. Budbreak was not recorded until May. Spring then brought warm temperatures straight away, allowing the plants to catch up in time and finally flower in mid-June. The summer then started very warm and dry. In August, cool, wet weather came as a surprise and ended with drier weather but much cooler nights. A large wave of hail followed at the end of August, but without any major damage to the vineyard. At the start of the harvest at the beginning of September, the sun again brought glorious weather and ensured very well-ripened grapes. The last day of harvest was on 12 October.
This Wiener Gemischter Satz comes from various vineyards within the Nussberg. The soil is characterised by limestone and shell limestone weathering with a high clay content. The main grape varieties are Grüner Veltliner, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Neuburger and Welschriesling.
All grape varieties are brought in together and a short maceration period of 6 hours follows. The pre-clarified must is then fermented spontaneously in steel tanks. The different batches mature on the fine lees before being blended into an assemblage.
Color:
Bright straw yellow with green reflections
Nose:
The gemischter Satz from the Nussberg delivers year after year with great consistency. Its nose is a wild potpourri of flavours. Chopped almond and green walnut. Apple, acacia and almond blossom. Marguerite and jasmine. Fennel, pea and artichoke. Apple, pear, grapefruit and plenty of lime. But also peach and yellow plum. White pepper, even a hint of turmeric and cinnamon. Its herbal spice is very dominant. Sage, lemon balm, lemon thyme, mint and lemongrass have a long-lasting effect.
Palate:
With the first sip, it proves its class and also shows its racy side. Instead of melting and insignificance, it is taut and purposeful. This leaves plenty of room for origin and reveals its stony base. The acidity and the delicate mellowness are not in a duel, but harmonise very well - the fruit and the versatile flavours from the floral, vegetal and balsamic corner also find their place again. The herbal spice also dominates the finish on the palate and provides plenty of refreshing moments.
Food pairing suggestions
- Marinated char with glazed turnips and herb oil (fish)
- Poached eggs with green sauce and focaccia (Vegetable & Vegetarian)
- Ajo Blanco (Vegetable & Vegetarian)
