Wine description for Garennes Extra Brut 13-21 LG21 from Georges Laval
Colour & appearance
Pale golden yellow in the glass, with a fine, lively mousse that bears witness to the long ageing on the lees and the artisanal vinification.
Nose
Vincent Laval's entry-level champagne has an exceptionally complex bouquet that clearly stands out from conventional champagnes. Earthy notes dominate, accompanied by dried herbs, mineral rock and a bouquet of white flowers. Crunchy apple flavours blend with plums and barberries, while subtle wood nuances add depth. The nose reveals an idiosyncratic terroir that is characterised less by typical Champagne chalk and more by the different soils of the Chambrecy, Damery, Cumières and Hautvillers vineyards.
Palate
The Garennes develops an impressive power on the palate. Salty minerality and stony precision characterise the first impression. Intense notes of salted lemon and sour apple combine with sourdough flavours to create a demanding, taut taste. The wine takes over the palate with vigour, alternating between tension and relaxation. Creamy textures and the lively mousseux provide balance, while bright, radiant moments alternate with dark, stony phases. The reserve wines from 2013 to 2021 lend exceptional depth without compromising freshness - a remarkable feat.
General information
This cuvée combines around 40% Pinot Meunier with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from four different terroirs. The base wines matured in one to ten-year-old barrels, disgorged on 2 August 2023 with a minimum of one gram of organic grape sugar per litre. Production: 12,083 bottles. With 12% alcohol and extra brut dosage, a purist, uncompromising champagne.
Food pairing suggestions
The salty minerality and firm structure harmonise perfectly with Norway lobster with green asparagus and lemon-aniseed crème fraîche, Scallops on hay with porcini mushroom salad or Carpaccio of sea bream with Meyer lemon and celeriac brunoise. The strength of the wine can withstand intense sea flavours.
Special features
An entry-level champagne at an exceptional level that impressively embodies the biodynamic philosophy of Georges Laval. The assemblage of different vintages creates complexity without heaviness - fragrant, lively and uncompromisingly independent.
