Wine description for Garennes Extra Brut 13-22, LG22 from Georges Laval
Colour & appearance
In the glass, it is a bright, pale golden yellow with a fine, precise mousseux that immediately reveals the artisanal quality of this champagne.
Nose
The Garennes reveals a fascinating aromatic complexity with Burgundian depth. The nose is dominated by earthy notes such as forest floor and a striking mineral structure. Layers of crunchy apple, quince and a subtle interplay of yellow and red plums unfold on top. Subtle hints of cranberry and grapefruit lend the bouquet a special freshness, while dried herbs provide an unmistakable spiciness.
Palate
On the palate, this champagne impresses with remarkable power and depth. The influence of the reserve wines (2013-2021) manifests itself in a remarkable complexity and structure. Short pome fruit harmonises with citrusy citrus fruit and zest, underpinned by a fine salty-mineral component. Subtle notes of Patisserie and bread crust from sourdough country bread give the wine an additional dimension. A light tannic grip and the elegant creaminess are perfectly balanced by a lively yet fine mousseux. The Garennes epitomises the ideal symbiosis of vinosity, maturity and freshness.
General information
This remarkable blend consists mainly of Meunier (approx. 90%) with small proportions of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (together approx. 10%) from the Chambrecy, Damery, Cumières and Hautvillers terroirs. The base wines from the 2013 to 2022 vintages were aged in barrels between one and ten years old - a testament to Vincent Laval's uncompromising approach. The champagne was disgorged on 13 June 2024 with just one gram of organic grape sugar per litre, which underlines its Extra Brut character.
Food pairing suggestions
The complexity and depth of this champagne predestine it as an accompaniment to Seafood like fried scallops or Lobster. It also harmonises with ripe Comté or Brie de Meaux. Its earthy notes also make it the perfect partner for Mushroom dishes or Poultry with truffles.
