Wine Description for Côtes Du Rhône “Petit Ours” rouge AOP 2023 by Du Coulet

Colour & Appearance
Dense, saturated violet-red, remaining nearly opaque right to the rim – a glass brimming with depth and youthful vigour.
Nose
The nose opens with direct, inviting fruit abundance: blackcurrant, cherry and a whisper of sloe form the aromatic backbone. Beneath shimmer refreshing Provençal herb notes alongside fine spice from white pepper and cedarwood – classic northern Rhône signature, rarely found at this price point.
Palate
On the palate, the “Petit Ours” shows its best side: fresh, juicy, invigorating. The fruit is present and unaffected, the acidity enlivens without demanding, and the tannins are refined and integrated. Not a gram of excess – just pure, honest drinking pleasure with genuine character.
Finish
Medium length, with a pleasantly spicy aftertaste of pepper and dark berries. The wine bids farewell cleanly and leaves you wanting another glass.
Terroir & Origin
Hailing from the northern Rhône Valley, where Syrah has its natural home. The cool granite soils and continental climate with southern warmth lend this Côtes du Rhône a freshness and precision that sets it apart from many of its more southerly counterparts.
Grape Variety & Vinification
Pure Syrah, vinified for fruit expression and drinking pleasure. The ageing apparently takes place without heavy oak – preserving the wine’s direct, unadorned aromatics and lively character. 13.5% alcohol – measured and harmonious.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Classically with grilled lamb, herb chicken or mature cheeses from the Auvergne. Surprisingly, it also harmonises beautifully with a chard roulade filled with pearl barley, cinnamon and raisins – the wine’s spice plays wonderfully with the warm spices of the filling.
Special Features
The “Petit Ours” – the little bear – is a wine without pretension, but with plenty of soul. An honest everyday wine from Du Coulet that shows the northern Rhône can set standards even in the accessible segment. Drink now, with pleasure and without lengthy waiting.
