Wine description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées AOC 2018 by Thomas Morey
Thomas Morey, a tenth-generation winemaker, delivers a masterclass in balance with his 2018 Les Embrazées. In a warm vintage such as this, it is the art of restraint that makes the difference: Morey relies on organic viticulture, minimal sulphiting and the careful use of new oak to allow the essence of his old vines from the 1950s to speak. This Premier Cru from the southernmost part of Chassagne combines the power of the sun with an almost wiry, mineral structure that is so characteristic of this appellation.
- Colour & Appearance
- Clear, brilliant straw yellow with pale golden reflections.
- Nose
- An inviting bouquet of white flowers, ripe lemon and yellow peach. Behind this, subtle notes of fresh hazelnuts and a hint of wet limestone emerge, perfectly woven into a discreet, smoky oak spice.
- Palate
- On the palate, the wine shows itself powerful and concentrated, supported by a silky texture. Aromas of ripe pear and brioche meet an invigorating, saline minerality. The 13% alcohol is perfectly integrated and allows the terroir expression the necessary space.
- Finish
- Remarkably long and precise. The finish is characterised by fine citrus freshness and a mineral aftertaste that makes you crave the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site “Les Embrazées” lies on the border with Santenay. The stony soils lend the Chardonnay a characteristic tension and depth.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay from old vines (planted in the 1950s/60s). Spontaneous fermentation, maturation in barriques with approximately 20% new oak, minimal sulphiting.
- Food Pairing Recommendations
- Excellent with seared scallops, sole Meunière or a creamy veal fricassée.
- Special Features
- Organically certified; Thomas Morey uses massale selections for new plantings to preserve the genetic diversity of the estate.
