Wine description for Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru blanc Clos Saint-Jean AC 2019 by Thomas Morey
- Colour & Appearance
- Clear, brilliant straw yellow with youthful, greenish reflexes at the rim.
- Nose
- An aristocratic bouquet that relies less on upfront fruit than on deep minerality. Precise notes of flint, wet stones and citrus zest emerge, underpinned by a hint of white flowers and an extremely subtle, smoky reduction that is typical of Morey’s purist style.
- Palate
- On the palate, the Clos Saint-Jean reveals the full mastery of the 2019 vintage: despite the warmth of the year, the wine maintains impressive tension and energy. It is bone-dry and compactly structured. The texture is silky, yet carried by a vibrant acidity and saline minerality. Aromas of green apple, ripe lemon and a hint of hazelnut meld with perfectly integrated oak.
- Finish
- Long and focused. The aftertaste is characterised by cool, chalky freshness and fine phenolics that enliven the palate and invite the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The Clos Saint-Jean is considered one of the most elegant vineyard sites in Chassagne-Montrachet. The soils here are stonier and lighter than in the lower part of the appellation, which gives the wine its characteristic finesse and lightness.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Chardonnay from old vines (planted in the 1950s/60s). Consistent organic management, spontaneous fermentation and careful maturation with only 20% new oak plus minimal sulphiting guarantee an unadulterated expression of terroir.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to seared scallops, lobster with Beurre Blanc or fine veal sweetbreads. Also excellent with mature Comté cheese.
- Special Features
- Thomas Morey continues the family tradition in the 10th generation, but with his organic certification and focus on freshness rather than opulence, he sets modern standards for the terroir of Chassagne.
