Wine selection
Our Pinot Noir comes from the Premier Cru site Île des Vergelesses, a lush 9.41 hectare terroir in Pernand-Vergelesses. With neighbours like Savigny les Beaune Les Vergelesses and Pernand-Vergelesses, this region is a treasure of the wine world. Not only is it more valuable than any other premier cru region in the locality, but it also achieves grand cru quality. The expressive terroir is rich in siliceous and calcareous red marl, coloured by abundant iron - a similar character to the Corton hill. This particular Pinot Noir selection from Domaine Chandon de Briailles comes from 13.31 hectares with vines averaging 40 years old, some even over 80 years old, planted in an easterly exposure. After a classic wood-cuve fermentation with 100% whole clusters, the wine was transferred via gravity to barriques and tonneaux with a small amount of new wood and aged for about 14 months, without further handling.
Color
An impressive garnet red.
Scent
This Pinot Noir unfolds with almost ethereal notes of barberry, mint and myrtle, underpinned by soft sandalwood, lovely rose petals and fruity sour cherries, oranges and wild strawberries. Subtle hints of foliage, undergrowth, lime and warm earth also emerge. In contrast to the rather darker and warmer Savigny wines, this is more of a light, earthy wine that brings out red-fruited tones.
Taste
On the palate, the 2019 Île des Vergelesses is a prime example of power and intensity. The wine has impressive energy with a mineral pulse enlivened by taut acidity. Aromas of sour cherries, blood orange, barberries and pomegranate can also be found here. The Pinot Noir also impresses with robust tannins and a dry texture. Its freshness and astringency contribute to its complexity and longevity, and its crystalline structure underlines its quality. If you are patient for a few years, this 2019 will mature into an amazingly weightless red wine that makes every sip worthwhile.
