Wine description for the Chamery Blanc, Coteaux Champenois 2021 from Bonnet-Ponson
Colour & appearance
Pale straw yellow with greenish reflections, crystal clear and of remarkable brilliance, which emphasises the purity of this rare still wine from Champagne.
Nose
A fascinating bouquet that is initially dominated by mineral notes - damp limestone and chalk, the unmistakable signature of the terroir. With a little air, flavours of green apple, lemon zest and white flowers unfold. The addition of Petit Meslier gives the wine an unusual complexity with hints of quince and fresh hay.
Palate
On the palate, the wine impresses with Razor-sharp precision and a vibrant acidity structure that is perfectly balanced. The moderate alcohol content of 11.5% emphasises the elegance. The texture is taut and focussed, with a pleasant salinity on the mid-palate that leads into a long, mineral finish. Notes of green pear, citrus and a hint of almond complete the flavour profile.
General information
This Coteaux Champenois represents the rarer, quieter side of Champagne. Cyril Bonnet, who returned to the family vineyard in 2013 and introduced organic farming, shows his considerable skill here. The combination of Chardonnay and the almost forgotten grape variety Petit Meslier is a bold move that gives the wine an unmistakable identity. The cool precision of the 2021 vintage is perfectly expressed in this wine.
Food pairing suggestions
Ideal for Oysters, Seafood plateau or Poached sea bass. The mineral structure harmonises excellently with Goat cheese and Comté. Also to Asparagus with hollandaise a remarkable accompaniment.
Special features
The inclusion of Petit Meslier, one of the rarest authorised Champagne grape varieties, makes this wine a real rarity. Bonnet-Ponson's organic cultivation and Cyril's careful vinification allow the terroir to express itself unadulterated. An intellectual wine that impressively documents the renaissance of still wines in Champagne and encourages reflection on the diversity of this region, which is often only known for its sparkling wines.
