Wine description for Blossom Blanc VdF 2024 from Matassa
Colour & appearance
A fascinating visual prelude: slightly cloudy with an intense orange colour and copper-coloured reflections - the unmistakable signature of an extended maceration period.
Nose
The Blossom Blanc reveals a complex aromatic profile that balances fruit and terroir. Ripe and unripe apricots with their pithy bitter notes, accompanied by green plums, present themselves on the surface. The floral elements - orange blossom and verbena - are supported by a striking citrus component (bergamot, lemongrass). Underneath lies a mineral base structure of stone, earth and wax.
Palate
Surprisingly silky for an orange wine of this style. The texture is finely woven, with an agile, precise acidity structure that perfectly matches the low alcohol content. Lemons and mandarins dominate the flavour profile, while the initial creaminess transitions elegantly into a tense surface structure. The wine has a remarkable tonic quality - savoury, mineral, with a subtle electric tension that invigorates the palate.
General information
Tom Lubbe from Matassa demonstrates his mastery of natural viticulture in Roussillon with this single-varietal Muscat d'Alexandrie. The 15-day maceration in large wooden barrels on skins and stems gives this wine its characteristic structure. Spontaneous fermentation without additives or sulphur emphasises the winemaker's purist philosophy. With only 9.0% alcohol and a subtle residual sweetness, Blossom is a refreshingly light-footed representative of the Orange Wine category.
Food pairing suggestions
The combination of fruit, texture and minerality makes this wine a versatile food companion. Particularly harmonious with Asian dishes with citrus notes, Seafood like oysters or tartare from Sea bass. Also to Goat cheese or North African tajines with lemon and olives is a remarkable accompaniment.
Special features
A fascinating example of the new wave of minimalist winemaking in Roussillon. This wine demonstrates that Muscat is not only suitable for sweet wines, but can also produce complex, dry wines with character when vinified appropriately. The low alcohol level makes it an ideal companion for long summer days without losing any of its complexity.
