Wine description for Riesling Frauenberg Grosses Gewächs from Battenfeld-Spanier
Terroir and origin
The Frauenberg is one of the outstanding sites in Rheinhessen, a wine-growing region that has experienced a remarkable renaissance over the last two decades. This Grand Cru site is characterised by its limestone soils, which give the Riesling a distinctive minerality and precision. The exposed hillside location with its optimal sun exposure allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly - a basic prerequisite for wines of exceptional depth.
The winery
Battenfeld-Spanier, under the management of Hans Oliver Spanierhas established himself as one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Germany. Together with his wife Carolin Spanier-Gillot (Kühling-Gillot winery), he is one of the most dynamic forces on the German wine scene. Their uncompromising dedication to terroir expression and minimal intervention in the cellar have fundamentally changed the perception of Rhine-Hessian wines.
Character
The Great Growth vom Frauenberg epitomises the highest quality level of German dry wines. It is a Riesling of remarkable rigour and precision, which expresses the limestone character of its origin in an unadulterated way. Typically, this wine displays a crystalline structure with a delicate acidity that runs like a silver thread through the wine. The aroma ranges between cool citrus notes, white flowers and a subtle herbal spiciness, underpinned by a salty minerality reminiscent of damp limestone.
Winemaking philosophy
Spanier's philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wines are born in the vineyard. His biodynamic cultivation aims to promote the natural balance of the vines and allow them to capture the essence of their terroir. In the cellar, intervention is kept to a minimum - spontaneous fermentation with natural yeasts, long maceration periods and ageing in large wooden barrels characterise his approach.
Food pairing suggestions
This sophisticated Riesling harmonises perfectly with refined fish dishes, especially with steamed sea bass or turbot in beurre blanc. It is also an elegant accompaniment to seafood with subtle flavours or a risotto with wild herbs.
