Wine Description for Barolo DOCG Castiglione 2019 by Vietti
- Colour & Appearance
- Sparkling ruby red with bright, shimmering towards garnet-red reflexes and subtle brown undertones – classic Nebbiolo optics with luminous brilliance in the glass.
- Nose
- A multi-layered aromatics that immediately reveals Barolo character: dark plum, blackberry and sloe form the fruit-driven foundation. Floral notes of violet and violetta layer over this, accompanied by sour cherry and wild strawberry. The tertiary aromas display complexity: damp forest floor, hints of black truffle, tree bark, hazelnut and walnut. A whisper of juniper and cubeb pepper round out the spicy profile.
- Palate
- The attack impresses with precise fruit, which now appears lighter and fresher than on the nose – red cherries dominate and lend the wine remarkable elegance. The earthy and spicy components integrate seamlessly. The fine-grained, present tannins are perfectly calibrated, never intrusive. The firm acidity plays against the fine bitter notes and creates tension-filled contrasts that keep the wine vibrant and encourage further sipping. Impressive balance between power and finesse.
- Finish
- Long, spicy and with lingering fruit. The tannin structure carries far without dominating. Piedmontese elegance in its purest form.
- Terroir & Origin
- A blend from several excellent Barolo cru vineyard sites from various communes across the entire DOCG region. Calcareous marl soils with varying composition depending on the parcel. Vines between 10 and 45 years old, Guyot training, approximately 4,500 plants per hectare.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- 100% Nebbiolo, hand-harvested from 7th October 2019, vinified parcel by parcel. Brief cold maceration, three to four weeks of skin contact, malolactic fermentation in wood. Ageing for approximately 30 months in large wooden vats and a small portion in used barriques. Final blending before bottling.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- Grilled lamb leg with green asparagus and Béarnaise sauce, beef brasato with potato and olive oil mash, spelt risotto with walnut and radicchio. Also excellent with aged hard cheeses.
- Special Features
- Vietti’s interpretation of a classic, accessible Barolo – a benchmark for quality and value for money in the portfolio of this renowned house. Drinking well now, but with ageing potential.
