Tasting note

Colour & Appearance
Luminous, semi-transparent ruby red.
Nose
Displays an aristocratic finesse rather than clumsy power. The bouquet radiates with fruity accents of redcurrant, wild strawberry and ripe sour cherry. Beneath lies a multi-layered spice featuring violet, dried rose petals, a hint of cedar, a touch of orange peel alongside subtle notes of baking spices, undergrowth and a delicate trace of vanilla.
Palate
On the palate, this single-varietal Sangiovese presents itself beautifully polished, balanced and intensely juicy. Alongside dark cherries and fresh forest berries, a ripe damson note emerges. The masterfully integrated acidity—so characteristic of the variety—structures the wine, whilst the fine-grained tannins provide a precise, tactile grip. At 14.0% ABV, the wine retains a remarkable freshness and balance.
Finish
Dense, intense and with impressive length. The fine fruit and cool herbal spice linger for a long time, leaving a vibrant, invigorating sensation.
Terroir & Origin
The grapes grow on the south-facing slopes of Col d’Orcia in Montalcino, situated at an altitude of around 250 metres directly above the Orcia River. Tuscany’s largest certified organic estate is defined by a rich ecosystem. The 2023 vintage demanded meticulous vineyard management due to a cool, wet spring, but culminated in a textbook summer that permitted a long physiological ripening period.
Grape Variety & Vinification
100% Sangiovese. Following a 10- to 12-day temperature-controlled skin fermentation in specially crafted, wide steel tanks, the wine matures for 10 to 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks (75 and 150 hl) as well as partially in concrete tanks. Col d’Orcia played a decisive role in shaping the creation of the independent Rosso di Montalcino DOC.
Food Pairings
Pairs exquisitely with classic Tuscan dishes such as Bistecca alla Fiorentina, braised wild boar ragù, delicate pasta with porcini mushrooms or a well-matured Pecorino.
Particularities
In the impressive 1.5-litre Magnum bottle, this finely structured Rosso matures particularly slowly and evenly. Col d’Orcia impressively proves here that a Rosso di Montalcino is no mere secondary wine, but an independent, radiant expression of the terroir.
