In the glass

  1. Colour

Bright lemon yellow with green reflections.

  2. Nose

Exuberant and multi-layered: fennel pollen, candied ginger, unripe papaya and persimmon meet lime, bergamot and kaffir lime; accompanied by coriander seed, nettle, lemon thyme and a hint of fresh pea.

  3. Palate

Remarkably light-footed with crisp acidity, a gentle texture and perceptible phenolics; cooling herbal notes and fine bitterness play off the delicate fruit for minutes on end.

  4. Character

Lean, racy and thrillingly tense – a true lightweight that, despite its filigree stature, lacks nothing and impresses with pinpoint precision.

  5. Pairing

Spinach dumplings in buttermilk sauce, chilled cucumber soup with Arctic prawns and crème fraîche, or an autumn salad with red cabbage, apple and roasted onions.

  6. Notes

Stainless steel maturation with 5% whole bunches as a stylistic signature of Andreas Schumann; the extremely wet September 2022 demanded painstaking selection and bestowed upon the wine its remarkable lightness at under 1 g/l residual sugar.

Tasting note

Colour & appearance
Bright lemon yellow with green reflections, underscoring the youth and freshness of this light-bodied wine.
Nose
Wild and untamed, yet at once approachable and shy. A fascinating interplay between yellow and green aromas: fennel pollen, ginger honey and candied ginger meet unripe papaya and freshly sliced persimmon. Lime, bergamot and kaffir lime provide a tart freshness, while coriander seed, fresh pea and artichoke open up a green dimension. Nettle, lemon thyme, mint and lemon balm lend an intense herbal freshness.
Palate
Remarkably light-footed at just 9.5% abv, yet with structure and a gentle texture. The phenolics contribute decisively to its success, while bitter compounds continually challenge the delicate fruit. The cooling herbal freshness defines the mouthfeel for minutes – never reminiscent of ice lollies, but rather of a fresh herbal infusion. Lean, racy, with incredible tension and precision.
Finish
Long-lasting and cooling, with a precision that leaves nothing wanting. The 7.2 g/l acidity ensures a bone-dry, electrifying finish.
Terroir & origin
In contrast to the limited high-altitude sites of the Odinstal valley (350 metres above the Rhine Valley), the vines for this wine are located in the Rhine Valley on sandy and clay soils. The 2022 vintage was marked by heavy rainfall in September – 110 litres per square metre at the end of the month caused the grapes to swell with water. Selection required immense effort, as all the ripe grapes succumbed to rot.
Grape variety & vinification
Riesling, fermented in stainless steel with only 5% whole bunches – a technique Andreas Schumann frequently employs. Filtered through cellulose in August and lightly sulphured before bottling. With less than 1 g/l residual sugar, this is a wine for advanced enthusiasts.
Food recommendations
The herbal freshness and lean structure make it an ideal companion for spinach dumplings in buttermilk sauce, chilled cucumber soup with Arctic prawns and crème fraîche, or an autumn salad with red cabbage, apple and roasted onions.
Special features
A true lightweight at a remarkably slender 9.5% abv – the result of an extremely rainy September 2022, mastered only through the most meticulous selection. The magnum bottle underscores the character of this wine: cool, precise, with a herbal freshness that is second to none.
