Tasting note
- Colour & Appearance
- Transparent, luminous ruby red with delicate pale rims – a Pinot Noir that announces its elegance already in the glass. Not a gram of excess, only clarity.
- Nose
- Seductively fine and multi-layered: fresh cherries, raspberries and a hint of wild strawberry open the bouquet. Beneath shimmer floral notes of violets along with a subtle mineral spice – the slate stone of the Dernau steep slopes makes itself known. Nothing is contrived, everything breathes.
- Palate
- Here Benny Baltes’ skill reveals itself in its purest form. The wine is slender, precise and strikingly fresh – at only 11% alcohol it remains light-footed without ever seeming insubstantial. Juicy red berry flesh, a vibrant acidity and finely chiselled, silky tannins shape a palate that possesses depth without ever raising its voice. Balanced right through to the final sip.
- Finish
- Medium to long-lasting, with a pleasantly saline slate minerality that clearly anchors the wine. The finish is dry, fresh and leaves an inevitable desire for the next sip.
- Terroir & Origin
- The vineyard site Dernauer Goldkaul belongs to the privileged steep slopes around Dernau on the Ahr – one of Germany’s northernmost red wine regions, characterised by weathered Devonian slate, extreme slope gradients and a microclimate that brings Spätburgunder to extraordinary ripeness and complexity.
- Grape Variety & Vinification
- Pure Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), cultivated according to organic principles – the Bertram-Baltes winery is pursuing biodynamic certification. Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes, the new dream team on the Ahr, rely on minimal intervention in the cellar: the wine speaks the language of its origin, unadulterated and direct.
- Food Pairing Suggestions
- An ideal companion to roasted salmon with herb crust, duck breast with cherry sauce or a classic Pinot Noir feast: grilled mushrooms with thyme and goat’s cheese. Also a delight with light pasta dishes with tomato sauce.
- Special Features
- Bertram-Baltes is the new star in the sky above the Ahr. What Julia Bertram and Benny Baltes present here in the first vintage of their joint project is remarkable: wines with depth, elegance and genuine drinking pleasure – never loud, always expressive. A name worth remembering.
