Tasting note

Character
A Großes Gewächs from the heart of the Kaiserstuhl – precise, profound and of unmistakable origin. Franz Keller, whose family has been among the style-defining names of German Pinot Noir for decades, understands how to give Spätburgunder a voice that unites elegance and substance in a single breath. The 2023 vintage promises ripeness and density, without sacrificing the delicate structure so characteristic of this style.
Terroir & Origin
The Schlossberg Achkarren is one of the most renowned single-vineyard sites of the Kaiserstuhl – that volcanic island mountain in the southern Baden Rhine Plain, which is one of the warmest and sunniest wine-growing regions in Germany. The characteristic loess and weathered soils of volcanic origin lend the wines a mineral depth and a warmth that is unmistakable. The continental climate with Mediterranean influences creates ideal conditions for a Spätburgunder of weight and complexity.
Grape Variety & Vinification
The Spätburgunder – Germany’s noblest red grape variety – reveals its own expressiveness in the Kaiserstuhl: fuller, warmer and fleshier than, for instance, on the Mosel or Ahr, yet never heavy. Franz Keller works with the ambition of the greatest possible fidelity to terroir, relying on meticulous hand-harvesting and a gentle ageing in barrique, which frames the fruit without dominating it. The result is a wine that places the character of its vineyard site above artisanal gesture – exactly what a Großes Gewächs should achieve.
Food Pairings
An ideal companion to duck breast with cherry sauce, fillet of venison with wild mushroom ragout or a classic Baden-style Sauerbraten. This wine also unfolds its full depth alongside mature Burgundy cheeses or a rich truffle risotto. If drinking it young, it should be generously decanted – it deserves time.
